1.1 Background of the Study
Poverty is one of the most pressing issues facing rural communities in Nigeria, including Jibia Local Government Area in Katsina State. Many families in Jibia face challenges such as limited access to basic healthcare, education, and adequate nutrition. Despite the prevalence of poverty, the issue is often underrepresented in mainstream media and policy discussions. Photo essays, which combine powerful images with narrative storytelling, offer a compelling way to highlight the lived experiences of impoverished communities. By documenting the struggles of residents, photo essays can humanize the issue, evoke empathy, and inspire action. This study explores the role of photo essays in documenting poverty challenges in Jibia, examining how they can bring attention to the community's needs and promote advocacy for poverty alleviation.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite efforts to address poverty in Jibia, there remains a lack of comprehensive documentation that reflects the real experiences of those affected by poverty. The absence of compelling visual narratives means that the issue is not always fully understood or prioritized by policymakers, NGOs, and the general public. Photo essays have the potential to bridge this gap by providing a visual representation of the community’s struggles. However, their role in highlighting poverty challenges in Jibia has not been adequately explored. This study aims to investigate how photo essays can be used to document poverty and advocate for social change in Jibia Local Government Area.
